Dwelling in a Task

Verlyn Klinkenborg's article on the rural life focuses on silence.  When he puts on sound reducing ear protection, he sometimes forgets to take them off, working on in silence.

When he does realize he's still wearing the earmuffs, he often leaves them on because "they heighten the feeling of dwelling in a task."

We read good writers in the hope that they will bring to voice something we wanted to say but couldn't.  So now I have one more way to think about the mystical quality of good work -- dwelling in a task.  To be fully present to and in the work we do, this is no small thing.
